Decorative green cloth binding, 8vo, 415,393 pages, black and white illustrated plates throughout with occasional in-text drawings; boards bright and square with a little wear at extremities, spines and strip along top rear board sun darkened, front internal hinges of both volumes show a hint of cracking but they remain sound and intact. According to the editor's preface, these books were created "to give women the information and help they are not likely to find in those books which are written chiefly from a man's point of view..." Slaughter opens by acknowledging that women have taken part in sport throughout history but have been constrained by social and political expectations and requirements. After giving a brief history of women and sport, the first chapter is on fox hunting and the final is all about tennis. The pages in between cover a wide variety of outdoor recreations on land and water, including a variety of hunting and fishing activities, driving, cycling and a few more competitive sports like golf, archery, croquet and racing, and are both instructional and reflective. Illustrations throughout, often photographic, of women in heavy dresses engaged in shooting, riding, handling dogs, etc.
