First edition, quarto, black and white marbled paper covered boards backed in black cloth with gilt rule and titles, 73,[1] pages, pictorial endpapers, black and white photographs throughout, number 246 of 400 numbered copies, this being one of the deluxe copies signed by both Welty and Anne Tyler, who did the introduction. Fine The book collects fifty-odd photographs, taken by Eudora Welty between 1930 and 1941. Most were taken while she was traveling for the WPA (Works Progress Administration). She was recording one of the bleakest periods of American history, an era of hopeless poverty. Yet according to Anne Tyler in the introduction, ".most of her subjects don't seem hopeless at all. In fact they seem curiously contented.
