Green cloth with gilt titles and decoration and paste-down illustration on front board. Corners bumped. Mild rubbing and edge wear to boards. Spine is sun darkened. Private library book plate in front end paper from the library of Lear VanBuskirk. Brief inscription at top corner of front free end paper. Sound binding with a slight lean. 384 pages. Charles Clark Munn (1848-1917) was raised on a farm but spent his working life as a traveling salesman. He wrote a number of books including Pocket Island, The Hermit, Uncle Terry, as well as Rockhaven. Frank Thayer Merrill was born in Boston in 1848. He studied at Boston Latin, the Lowell Institute and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. After travel and study in Europe, he began a career as a book illustrator. He illustrated standard editions of English classics, such as Thackeray and Scott, and original works by many American authors, including Hawthorne and Twain.
