Seven large hardcovers in green cloth with embossed black decoration and gilt titles, all edges gilt, 10 1/4 x 8 inches, approximately 250 pages per volume except for volume VII which has about 400 pages, several color chromolithograph plates in each volume, numerous black and white illustrations throughout; boards are rubbed and edge worn with corners and spine ends wearing through and fraying, Volume VII has cloth splitting at the tail of the front joint and the head of the rear joint, some of the internal hinges have been repaired with Japanese tissue, scattered foxing throughout, previous owner's name inked in front end paper of Volume VII, bindings sometimes tender. Was issued in eight volumes with Volume VIII being a supplemental index. The supplement is not included with this set. Beautiful Victorian era gardening reference set with stunning color illustrations. Very comprehensive, covering all manner of plant, tree, shrub, flower, cactus, succulent, fruit and vegetable imaginable. George Nicholson was an English Botanist and Horticulturist in the nineteenth century who was one of 60 awarded the Victoria Medal of Honour by the Royal Horticultural Society in 1897 for their contributions to horticulture. His master work was the Illustrated Dictionary of Gardening, which serves still as the basis for The Royal Horticultural Society's present Dictionary of Gardening published by Oxford.
