Originally written by Mae West as a play in 1928, Diamond Lil is one of West's greatest characters. Diamond Lil' was West's first major Broadway success, and was the basis for her character Lady Lou in her 1933 film She Done Him Wrong. Diamond Lil' takes the New York underworld of the 1890s and builds a farcical melodrama around the denizens of its bars, honkey-tonks, dives and pleasure palaces. Here, Diamond Lil' reigns as queen of the underworld.
