The Night After Christmas was written in 1866 by Doctor Robert Archer of Virginia. His original verse, written on both sides of a sheet of stationery and subsequently framed between two pieces of glass, served as manuscript for the compositor. Archer wrote the parody for his granddaughter. The poem describes the aftermath of the visit from "Old Santa Claus," showing the disastrous effects of overindulgence.
