After the publication of Hesse's final novel, The Glass Bead Game, he spent the final two decades of his life writing short pieces of fiction, poetry and essays, while pursuing his interest in watercolors. He also corresponded with his many fans after receiving the Nobel Prize. Interrupted School Hours was one of his short stories about his childhood, first appearing in Swiss Month Magazine in 1948. This proof came from the collection of one of Hesse's many correspondents.
