9.25 x 6.5 inches; vii, 281,  pages; illustrated. Bound in green Morocco elaborately decorated in gilt, banded spine, all edges gilt, marbled end papers. Boards are scuffed along edges and wearing through at corners and spine ends, raised bands on spine are scuffed, small spot of soiling on rear board, faint old price of 40c in first blank page, damp stain to top corner tip of first few pages, tanned square in pages 12-13 where a small piece of paper was once laid into the book, very occasional foxing, sound binding. Overall a beautiful book, in wonderful condition. Josiah Gilbert Holland (1819 - 1881) was an American novelist and poet who also wrote under the pseudonym Timothy Titcomb. He helped to found and edit Scribner's Monthly (later called the Century Magazine), in which appeared his novels, Arthur Bonnicastle, The Story of Sevenoaks, Nicholas Minturn. He wrote the poems "Bitter Sweet", "Kathrina", the lyrics to the Methodist hymn "There's a Song in the Air", and many others.
