Cloth; 271 pages. Author's signature (as W. D. Howells) pasted into front end paper along with silver gelatin sepia photograph of Howells at his desk. Red cloth with publisher's stamp to front board. Top edge gilt. Boards are smudged and edge worn with a hint of fraying at extremities. Small water spot at tail of spine. Front hinge starting. Slight lean to spine. Nicknamed "The Dean of American Letters", Howells was particularly known for his tenure as editor of The Atlantic Monthly as well as for his own prolific writings, including the story "Christmas Every Day", and the novels "The Rise of Silas Lapham" and "A Traveler from Alturia.
