Terracotta cloth with blue decoration to front board. Boards are clean with mild rubbing and wear at edges and corners. Light, short circular indentation to front board at fore edge. Spine ends pushed in. Very small brown spot to fore edge of text block. Pages tanned. Binding straight and tight. 326 pages. A collection of sequentially related short stories about World War II. The stories were based on observations and anecdotes Michener collected while stationed as a lieutenant commander in the US Navy on the island of Espiritu Santo in the New Hebrides Islands. Won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1948, and was adapted as a Broadway musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein in 1949.
