7 3/4 x 5 1/4 inches, 334 pages, local advertisements; white oil cloth boards are rubbed and worn with a bit of soiling, a little fraying at corners, cloth on spine is creased and wearing through, "Neighborhood" handwritten on spine, front internal hinge cracked at end paper, a few clipped recipes and several handwritten recipes in front and rear endpapers and blank pages, also many handwritten recipes in blank spaces provided throughout the book, pages toned from age, binding a little tender but holding. The first edition of the Neighborhood Cook Book was issued in December, 1912 and exhausted within ten months. So great was the demand from all parts of the United States, that the Council decided to issue a second edition in 1914. An interesting window into the incorporation of local American culture into the Jewish immigrant experience. At the same time rabbis in Eastern Europe were requiring kosher certification on food packages sent to their regions, many Jews were integrating, adapting and modifying kosher ritual to fit their modern lives in America. The Neighborhood Cookbook contained many non-kosher dishes. An entire chapter, "Shell Fish and Shell Fish Entrees," dedicated to local seafood items such as clams, oysters, crab and lobster, all of which were forbidden according to the laws of Kashrut. The integration of Oregonian cuisine, including non-kosher shellfish, reveals the integration of middle and upper class Jews into Portland culture. Scarce copy of this comprehensive cook book with many regional ads of the time.
