Three quarter bound in red paste grain leather over marbled paper, straight grain spines ruled in gilt with gilt titles and year, top edges gilt, marbled endpapers, four volumes: lxxxiv, 409; , 395; , xiii, 432; vi, 508 pages, Illustrated with 48 engraved plates after Robert Smirke and with engraved vignettes; boards rubbed and edge worn, leather to spines is crackling with scattered chipping, scattered mild foxing throughout, gutter exposed at title page of Volume III with no loosening of pages, else sound and attractive copies. Robert Smirke's illustrations provide a variety of perspectives to the text. Sometimes quite sentimental, even tender, while at others following the more traditional farcical interpretation. Though she is uncredited, even in the publisher's lengthy preface on translation, this edition was translated by Robert Smirke's daughter, an artist, printmaker and painter in her own right.
