25 Union College Class of 1857 Yearbook [Henry Rathbone: Lincoln Assassination]
Schenectady, New York Union College 1857 Hardcover Very Good Hardcover 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾
Large hardcover, 9 1/2 x 8 inches (approx), portraits of faculty and graduates with pages of inscriptions and signatures between, unnumbered pages, commencement address and several other documents in rear; three quarter bound in brown Morocco with four raised bands to spine and gilt decorations and titles, boards rubbed and scuffed, especially at extremities, joints just beginning to crack at ends, marbled end papers, scattered foxing and brown spots throughout, binding sound. Book is large and heavy. The yearbook belonged to Henry R. Lovell, who seemed to be popular with his classmates and who was the recipient of a prize scholarship. The yearbook is most notable, however, because Henry Rathbone was a classmate of Lovell and is included along with an inscription and signature. Rathbone was one of the last people to talk to President Abraham Lincoln on the night of his assassination in 1864. He and his wife Clara were guests of the Lincoln's at the Ford Theatre on the fateful night. Rathbone tried to grab John Wilkes Booth after the assassin fired his derringer at the back of Lincoln's head. He was seriously injured when Booth used a knife to slash his arm, then made his escape. He spent the next twenty years wondering if he could have saved the President. In 1883,after a bout of worsening headaches, and marital discord, he stabbed his wife to death on Christmas day, then tried to commit suicide. He was found insane, and spent the rest of his life in an asylum, where he died in 1911.

A stream of 39 novels followed, the last of which appeared in 1881. The Miser's Daughter was published in a serialized form in the Ainsworth's Magazine with some overlap with Windsor Castle. George Cruikshank served as illustrator. The work was later published in novel format, but it did not include all of the illustrations used in the magazine. The novel is a historical romance that describes a young man pursuing the daughter of a miserly rich man during the 18th century.
