28 Union College Class of 1857 Yearbook [Henry Rathbone: Lincoln Assassination]
Schenectady, New York Union College 1857 Hardcover Very Good Hardcover 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall
Large hardcover, 9 1/2 x 8 inches (approx), portraits of faculty and graduates with pages of inscriptions and signatures between, unnumbered pages, commencement address and several other documents in rear; three quarter bound in brown Morocco with four raised bands to spine and gilt decorations and titles, boards rubbed and scuffed, especially at extremities, joints just beginning to crack at ends, marbled end papers, scattered foxing and brown spots throughout, binding sound. Book is large and heavy. The yearbook belonged to Henry R. Lovell, who seemed to be popular with his classmates and who was the recipient of a prize scholarship. The yearbook is most notable, however, because Henry Rathbone was a classmate of Lovell and is included along with an inscription and signature. Rathbone was one of the last people to talk to President Abraham Lincoln on the night of his assassination in 1864. He and his wife Clara were guests of the Lincoln's at the Ford Theatre on the fateful night. Rathbone tried to grab John Wilkes Booth after the assassin fired his derringer at the back of Lincoln's head. He was seriously injured when Booth used a knife to slash his arm, then made his escape. He spent the next twenty years wondering if he could have saved the President. In 1883,after a bout of worsening headaches, and marital discord, he stabbed his wife to death on Christmas day, then tried to commit suicide. He was found insane, and spent the rest of his life in an asylum, where he died in 1911.

A stream of 39 novels followed, the last of which appeared in 1881. The Miser's Daughter was published in a serialized form in the Ainsworth's Magazine with some overlap with Windsor Castle. 81 Bemelmans, Ludwig Golden Basket
New York, NY Viking Press 1939 1st Edition Hardcover Very Good Good Hardcover 4to - over 9
10 x 7 1/2 inches, 96 pages, color illustrations and black and white drawings throughout; red cloth boards with blind embossed swan on front board, bit of fading to board edges and head/tail of spine, pictorial end papers with a little browning, pages lightly toned with age, binding sound, worn dust jacket with small edge tears, chipping and creases along top rear edge, small chip out at head of spine, now in protective mylar cover. The Golden Basket was inspired by a trip to Belgium and by Bemelmans growing up in his father's hotel in Austria. The book tells the story of a father and his two daughters' visit to Bruges and a hotel with a golden basket on its roof. The girls discover a world of imaginative fun within the hotel itself as well as in the picturesque city of medieval buildings and towers, where graceful swans swim in the canals and a lamplighter makes his daily rounds. On a visit to Bruges Cathedral they meet a dozen little schoolgirls, including a mischievous French schoolgirl named Madeline. This cameo was her first appearance in print, well before the first Madeleine book was published in 1939.

95 Brent, Robert The Golden Book of Chemistry Experiments: How to Set Up a Home Laboratory -- Over 200 Simple Experiments
New York, NY Golden Press 1960 Hardcover Very Good No Jacket Hardcover 4to - over 9 Lazarus, Harry
Third printing of first edition with letter line to C on last page; large hardcover, 11 1/4 x 8 1/4 inches, 104 pages with color illustrations throughout; boards are are clean and bright with mild wear to corners and spine ends, gift inscription at top of title page dated 1971, internally clean, crisp and bright with sound binding. The Golden Book of Chemistry Experiments was intended to explain to kids how they could learn about science by setting up a home chemistry lab and conducting simple experiments, but in the late 1960s the US government had the book removed from libraries and banned for sale because the projects "were too dangerous for its intended audience." This book is so incredibly comprehensive, I imagine most adults would find it daunting, but it is also fascinating. Everything the beginning chemist needs to start a home laboratory, descriptions of the elements, chemical formulas, chemical compounds, metals and nonmetals, etc. Even chapters on organic chemistry and chemical mathematics. All with detailed and instructive illustrations. This book remains one of the best do-it-yourself science books of all time. A second printing was made in 1962 and a revised edition was printed in 1963.
